There is no NYDFS 500 package of its own yet. The Cyber and Data Protection Assessment covers the controls most of it shares with other frameworks, and the NYDFS 500-specific requirements are scoped with you in a 30-minute call.

What it asks for

In plain English, what NYDFS 500 expects you to have in place.

  • A written information security programScoped to the customer information you hold, owned by a named individual.
  • Risk assessmentDocumented, repeated on a schedule, and driving what you actually implement.
  • Core controlsMFA, encryption in transit and at rest, access reviews, secure configurations, patching and logging.
  • Third-party oversightService providers assessed, contracted and monitored for how they protect the data you give them.
  • Incident response and noticeA written plan, rehearsed, that meets the notification windows your regulator sets.
  • Testing and reportingPeriodic testing of the controls and a report to leadership or the board.

A note on authority: the regulator, auditor or certifying body has the final say on whether you comply. We help interpret the requirements, scope what applies, gap-assess against what is published today, and keep you compliance-ready and secure as the guidance evolves. We hold no regulatory authority and do not certify.

Where it starts

Your one-stop shop for NYDFS Part 500

Part 500 is a cybersecurity program, a written policy, a CISO function, MFA everywhere, an asset inventory, access reviews, training, vendor oversight, incident reporting within 72 hours and a certification signed each April.

We run the program for small covered entities, support the CISO function the rule requires, and keep the April filing to an afternoon.

Which systems, data, people and vendors are in. A clear boundary is a smaller job and a cleaner answer.

With AccuSights: we scope it with you from the intake form and put it in writing.

Most gaps are in the policies and workflows nobody wrote down, not the firewall.

With AccuSights: remediation is in-house or with your IT provider, verified in your real environment.

Why AccuSights

Why small teams pick AccuSights for NYDFS Part 500

Most compliance platforms assume you have a security team. We built this for the companies that do not.

Priced for a startup, not a Series D

One fixed fee, scoped from the intake form and put in writing. No seat math, no surprise add-ons at renewal.

The endpoint agent is built in

Our own agent collects device evidence from every laptop and server automatically. You do not need to buy or configure an enterprise MDM first.

A human who has done this before

A named engineer guides every step, answers the "how far do we take this control?" questions and stays through the audit.

Written once, read everywhere

One control set is mapped to every framework you carry, so evidence is produced once and reused.

Questions

NYDFS Part 500 questions we get every week

Who has to comply with NYDFS Part 500?
Covered entities: anyone operating, or required to operate, under a license, registration or charter under New York banking, insurance or financial services law. That includes small insurance agencies, mortgage brokers and lenders, not only banks. Branches of out-of-state firms licensed in New York are covered too.Source: NYDFS, Part 500
What changed on 1 November 2025?
The final phase of the 2023 amendment took effect: multi-factor authentication for any individual accessing any of your information systems, and a written, maintained asset inventory. Together with earlier phases, that completes the amended rule. Examiners now test both, so check every remote access path and cloud account.Source: NYDFS, Part 500
What is the limited exemption for small firms?
Section 500.19 gives a limited exemption to firms below thresholds for staff, New York revenue or total assets. It removes some sections, but core duties such as the risk assessment, MFA, access privileges, the asset inventory and event reporting remain. File the notice of exemption and confirm the thresholds with counsel.Source: NYDFS, Part 500
When is the annual filing due?
By 15 April each year, for the prior calendar year. You file either a certification of material compliance or a written acknowledgment of noncompliance that names the gaps and the plan to fix them, signed by the CEO and the CISO. Keep the evidence behind it for five years.Source: NYDFS, Part 500
How fast must a cybersecurity event be reported?
Within 72 hours of determining that a reportable cybersecurity event occurred, through the DFS portal. An extortion payment must be reported within 24 hours, with a written explanation within 30 days. A rehearsed incident plan is what makes the 72 hours realistic for a small firm.Source: NYDFS, Part 500
Do you certify NYDFS compliance?
No. The certification is signed by your own CEO and CISO and filed with DFS, which has the final say. We do the work behind the signature: the risk assessment, the policies, MFA and inventory checks, the incident plan, and support for whoever holds the CISO role.
Where do we start with NYDFS 500?
With the 3-minute Cyber Hygiene Test if you want a number today, or with the 30-minute call if you want a written scope and a fixed fee. Either way the first deliverable is a gap list ranked by what would fail and what would hurt.
We also need other frameworks. Do we do NYDFS 500 separately?
No. We build one control set and map it to every framework you carry, so evidence is produced once and reused. Adding a framework later is a mapping exercise, not a second program.
